The technical information for each of the polycarbonate options is outlined in the chart below:

35mm POLYCARBONATE PERFORMANCE VALUE
Polycarbonate Type Light Transmission Solar Transmission U Value W/m2k Shading Efficiency
Clear 63% 62% 1.5 72%
Opal 15% 35% 1.5 41%
Bronze 20% 23% 1.5 27%
Bronze / Opal* 10% 15% 1.5 17%
Heatguard / Opal** 5% 8% 1.5 9%

Light Transmission - percentage of light transmitted through the polycarbonate sheet
Solar Transmission - the proportion of the Suns energy that is transmitted through the sheet. The lower the percentage the better it is
U Value - measures heat loss to the outside. The lower the U value the more thermally efficient it is
Shading Efficiency - The lower the figure the more shade is created

*Bronze/Opal gives a bright internal appearance even on a dull day, reduces solar heat gain and provides privacy.

**Heatguard/Opal limits the potential for heat build-up within the conservatory, whilst allowing light to enter the roof, deflecting solar radiation and reducing solar heat gain by up to 50% when compared to conventional polycarbonates.

DIY Conservatory Upgrade Options

We can tailor your DIY conservatory to perfectly meet your requirements using our many upgraded products such as:

  • Coloured Profiles - Rosewood, Rosewood on White, Golden Oak, Golden Oak on White

    Swift DIY Conservatory coloured profiles
  • Glass Roofs - various options available

Glass roofs have become more and more popular in recent years especially with the introduction of high performance glass which is designed specifically for conservatory roofs. Some of the benefits of these high performance glass units compared to standard glass units are:

    • Much greater heat reflection (keeping conservatory cool in summer)
    • Much greater thermal insulation (Keeping conservatory warm in winter)
    • Much greater UV protection (which helps to protect furniture and fabrics from harmful UV rays)
    • Easy Clean coatings. (This feature enables water to run off the glass, taking the dirt and grime with it and therefore dramatically reduces the manual cleaning required.)
    • Much greater glare factor. (Reduces glare all year round)

The product Swift Conservatory Solutions recommends is Celsius glass but Pilkington Activ is also available on request.

For further details of this amazingly beautiful product please see the Celcius downloads within the DIY Conservatory Resource Centre.

DIY Conservatory Glass Roof Terminology; Explained

  • U Value: This is used to measure the internal heat loss during colder periods. The lower the number the greater the insulation.
  • Solar Factor: This is the percentage of total solar energy (or heat from the sun) able to pass through the glass.
  • Light Transmission: This is the percentage of visible light directly transmitted through the glass.
  • Heat Reflection: The amount of solar energy (heat from the sun) reflected away.
  • UV (Cover) Protection: Percentage protection against fading of furniture and fabrics from ultra violet rays (sunlight).
  • Cleaning Options: Self Clean (Process) or Easy Clean (Minimal Maintenance Required) .

Upgraded Frame Glass Options For Your DIY Conservatory

Swift DIY Conservatory Glass OptionsAs standard Swift Conservatory window frames are supplied with 28mm Double Glazed Toughened Safety Glass Units to BS6206A & BS EN 1279. These offer a U Value of 2.8.

The U Values of the various glass options are as follows:

  • 28mm Argon Filled Glass Units - 2.6
  • 28mm Argon Filled K Glass Units - 1.6
  • Celsius Blue or Clear - 1.4
  • Celsius Clear Argon Filled - 1.2
  • Celsius Plus - 1.2

Your frame glass can be upgraded to K Glass which reflects the heat from radiators etc back into the conservatory or to a high performance product such as Celsius Clear which reflects the heat from radiators etc back into the conservatory whilst reflecting solar heat away from the conservatory keeping the conservatory cool in summer and warm in winter.
